Construction Estimator vs Quantity Surveyor – What's the Difference?

05/10/2026

Construction estimators and quantity surveyors both work with construction costs, but their roles can be different.

A construction estimator is generally focused on determining what it will cost to actually construct a project.

This may involve:

  • Measuring quantities from drawings

  • Preparing Bills of Quantities

  • Calculating material requirements

  • Calculating labour requirements

  • Applying supplier and subcontractor rates

  • Preparing tender estimates

  • Production estimating

  • Reviewing construction methods

  • Preparing purchasing information

A quantity surveyor can also undertake cost estimating but may work across broader areas of professional cost management, including cost planning, progress valuations, contractual matters and financial reporting throughout the project.

For builders, developers and owner-builders who primarily need a detailed construction estimate or BOQ based on the drawings, a construction estimating service may provide exactly the information required.

The right service depends on the project and why the cost information is required.

At G.A. Building Group, our estimating service combines practical construction experience with detailed quantity take-offs and cost estimating.
